-
- Dear LiveWire User,
-
-
- Thank you for using LiveWire for the WorkPlace Shell.
-
- This special notes section is an attempt to help you get aquainted with
- LiveWire. Each time you close the LiveWire terminal object, a new page of notes
- will appear containing information that may help you learn some of the new
- features in LiveWire.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.2. Object-Oriented Interface ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
-
- LiveWire is a full WorkPlace Shell object-oriented program. It is made up of a
- collection of related objects. The three objects visible in the LiveWire Folder
- are the LiveWire Terminal, Phone Book, and the Log.
-
- As an OS/2 user, you should be somewhat familiar with objects. You use
- WorkPlace Shell objects every day, such as Folders, Files, Drives, and
- Printers. LiveWire's objects work in much the same way.
-
- Because LiveWire is a collection of objects, more than one object can be
- created and in use at a time. In other words, you may create as many LiveWire
- Terminal objects as you want, each with its own connection settings.
-
- The installation program creates one LiveWire Folder object on your desktop
- that contains the basic objects you will need to use LiveWire. To create
- another LiveWire Folder, open your Templates Folder and drag and drop the
- "LiveWire Folder" template to the desktop.
-
-
- The object-oriented architecture of LiveWire will also allow us to create new
- objects to your system that will interact seamlessly with LiveWire.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.3. Using the Settings Pages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
-
- All objects in the WorkPlace Shell have a settings page, and so do the objects
- in the LiveWire package. To bring up the settings for any object, select
- "Settings" from the object's pop-up menu.
-
- Each object's settings page contains settings appropriate for that object. For
- example, the Phone Book object allows you to set the dialing parameters.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.4. Using Pop-up Menus ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
-
- Pop-up menus are a great feature that saves you both space and time. Unlike
- standard menus that always occupy the top line of a window, pop-up menus take
- up no extra room. In addition, pop-up menus display a short list of options
- that apply only to what you are currently doing. No more searching through
- endless nested menus to find that elusive command.
-
- To bring up a pop-up menu, click once with the right mouse button on a portion
- of a window. LiveWire uses pop-up menus in several places. The terminal window
- has a pop-up icon bar. The scroll back window has a pop-up menu that allows you
- to search as well as copy and quote text.
-
-
-
- The phone book object has two pop-up menus. When you right-click on an entry in
- the phone book, you get a pop-up menu specific to that entry.
-
- Right-clicking on a empty portion of the phone book (one that contains no
- entries) brings up a pop-up menu for the entire phone book. This menu allows
- you to sort your phone book entries, for example.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.5. Copying, Pasting, and Dragging text ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
-
- Copying and pasting text in the LiveWire terminal is similar to copying and
- pasting text in other applications. First, select the text by dragging a
- selection box around the desired text. Moving the mouse inside the selection
- region causes the pointer to turn to scissors. Clicking once in the selection
- region causes the text to be copied to the system clipboard.
-
- Once text is selected, however, you can also DRAG AND DROP the selected text to
- any text window or entry field with the right mouse button.
-
- This feature is useful for moving a phone number into the phone book, or just
- moving a section of text into an editor.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.6. Full Screen Text Mode ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
- LiveWire allows you to switch from the WorkPlace Shell graphical mode into a
- full screen text mode and back on the fly!
-
- Finding it difficult to read your messages in a small window? Pressing F12
- while in the LiveWire Terminal object will switch to full screen text mode.
- Once in full screen text mode, you can switch back to graphical mode by
- pressing F12 again!
-
- Your screen contents, port parameters, emulation, and file paths are preserved
- for a seamless look and feel.
-
- NOTE: The first time you switch to full screen text mode you will have to
- answer a few simple questions to set up the text mode version of LiveWire.
- After doing this once you will no longer be asked those questions.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.7. Modem Lights and Line Statistics ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
-
- The LiveWire terminal includes two windows that will help you keep track of
- your modem.
-
- Modem lights displays a graphical view of your modem and its status. Don't be
- bothered by the fact that this window floats separately from the main LiveWire
- terminal window. You can re-size the window to any size you wish and place the
- window somewhere on your desktop where it won't get in the way.
-
- The line statistics window displays the average and instant data transfer rates
- your modem is attaining. A LED graph makes it real cool looking. OK, it's not
- THAT useful, but it might impress your friends.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.8. Using Your Old Phone Book ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
-
- LiveWire can import a number of dialing directory formats directly into the
- LiveWire Phone Book object. Formats we currently support are ZOC 2.x, Qmodem
- 3.x 4.x 5.x and Windows, Procomm, Procomm+, and Telix 1.53, 3.x for DOS.
-
- If you have an old dialing directory you can import it into a LiveWire Phone
- Book by opening up the phone book object, then right clicking on a free (white)
- area of the phone book. A pop-up menu will appear, one of the options being
- Import. Select import, then enter the filename of your old phone book.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.9. Upload and Download folders and the UNZIP utility ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
-
- Every LiveWire Folder object contains two other folders, one named Upload and
- the other named Download. For those who don't speak modemese, the Upload folder
- contains files you will be sending and the Download folder contains files you
- have received. These folders keep you from having to mess with ugly path names
- and allow you to manipulate files directly from the WorkPlace Shell.
-
-
-
- LiveWire also includes an UNZIP utility. To use it, open the upload or download
- folder and locate a file with a .ZIP extension. Bring up the pop-up menu for
- that data file, and one of the options on the pop-up menu is "LiveWire UNZIP."
- Selecting this option on the pop-up menu will uncompress the file's contents to
- a new directory. When the the file has been completely uncompressed the UNZIP
- utility will open the new folder.
-
- In order to use the UNZIP utility, you must install Info-ZIP's freeware
- UNZIP.EXE program and the UNZIP.EXE program must be in your PATH.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.10. RIPTerm Graphical Emulation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- This notes section will continue to appear until you purchase the LiveWire
- product. For information on how to register, click here.
-
- LiveWire also includes the popular graphical emulation RIPTerm 1.54 from
- Telegrafix. If you call a bulletin board system that supports RIPTerm,
- switching to this emulation is all you need to explore RIPTerm.
-
- Note: As of version 3.2, we have started packaging RipTerm as a separate add-on
- product. This is mainly due to three reasons. First, to reduce LiveWire's size.
- Second, because RipTerm is falling out of favor with the general public due to
- Telegraphics inability to produce a reasonable v2.0 specification. Third, our
- Ripterm never quite reached the stability and completeness we had strived for.
